Gotion High-Tech is set to build a lithium-ion battery plant costing up to $6.3 billion that will produce batteries that generate up to 100 gigawatt hours (GWh) of power a year, Morocco’s Agency for the Development of Investment and Exports said on Thursday. The Chinese electric vehicle battery maker has signed an agreement with the Moroccan government, but plans for the plant are still pending, according to Reuters. The country is a regional production hub for European automakers Renault and Stellantis with a combined annual capacity of 700,000 cars, the report said. The world’s eighth-biggest battery supplier by shipment, Volkswagen-backed Gotion sold 14.1 GWh of batteries last year, and has partnered with automakers including major shareholder Volkswagen, as well as General Motor’s China venture SAIC-GM-Wuling and Great Wall Motor.
